The Truth Part 5
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Aidan asked me.
I nodded and took a deep breath. My legs felt extremely weak. I made my way slowly up the steps, looked back at the car and saw Aidan give me a reassuring nod, and rang the doorbell. The door opened and there he was, holding a female version of himself. His smiling face immediately went cold.
"Mia," was all he said.
He gestured for me to come inside and I accepted. I took a seat in the living room while he put the baby back down in her crib. He came and joined me on the couch and we sat there in an awkward silence.
"Why are you..." he started.
"So this is it? This is the reason you left mom, Paige, and I? To have two new daughters, fall in love with someone else, and have that someone else coincidentally be your old daughter's ex best friend's mom? What is wrong with you?" I asked in disgust.
"Look Mia, it's complicated."
"No. No it's really not, not at all. You left us to be with another family! Plain and simple!"
He look annoyed now. "Please don't raise your voice, Isabella is trying to sleep."
"Oh excuse me! God for bid I wake up your daughter that you clearly love more than you ever loved us!"
"Enough!" he yelled. "You don't get it! Why are you here? To interrogate me and tell me how terrible of a human being I am? Because I don't care. You don't get what happened and you never will!"
"Then tell me! Did you ever wonder how Paige and I were? Did you ever even care about us?"
He looked me dead in the eyes. "Mia, this happened so long ago, but you were just too young to realize. The first time I met Sophia's mom was not the day you guys had your first play date. We went to elementary, middle, and high school together. Then senior year she moved across the country with her family for her dad's work. We dated in middle school and all of high school. She refused to do long distance. The last day I saw her I told her that I would find her someday. That we would be together if we were truly meant to be. I married your mother because I loved her. I truly did, but there was always something deep down in my heart I didn't know. So then when you and Sophia had your first play date, the hidden feelings instantly came up. I didn't want to have feelings for her, I knew I couldn't. I liked my life, but something always felt off. I had two beautiful daughters and a loving wife, but I couldn't control my feelings. At first we became friends, but then we started hanging out more and more. Her and her boyfriend never got married. They broke up shortly after Sophia started second grade, so we had a small relationship that no one knew about. We both agreed that we wanted to see if we still had what we had in high school, and we didn't."
"Then why did you leave us for her?"
"Because we had even more. Everything was better than it was before. I was so much happier than I ever was with your mother. For years we kept it a secret until it finally got to a point where I couldn't be this unhappy with one person and happy with another. We told Sophia in sixth grade and at first she was furious. She went three months without talking to her mother. Then one day I was at the house and she saw how happy her mom was. She obviously hated the idea of us being together, but all she wanted was for her mom to be happy and she finally was. She then broke things off with you to protect us, which I will admit was wrong. I'm sorry we took her away from you and I'm sorry that I left you guys with no warning, but I couldn't live with one family knowing I was meant to be with another. I left on Christmas because they were flying out to Florida on Christmas Eve and I told her I would meet them Christmas Day," he explained this like he didn't even care about leaving us.
Those might have been the most painful words I have ever heard. I tried so hard not to cry so he wouldn't think he was hurting me, but I couldn't help it. My cheeks were soaked and salty. He wasn't happy with us. For how long? Why did he marry mom if he "knew" that he was going to be with Sophia's mom someday?
"You weren't happy with us? Why did you marry mom if you were so convinced that you were going to eventually find your way back to your "one true love"? Why did you keep this from us the entire time? Why did you do this? Paige is going into middle school in a few years! I'm graduating high school in two months! You missed my sweet sixteen and you're going to miss Paige's! You won't be there to walk you kids down the aisle at their wedding! Do you not care? Do you know how hard it is going to be walking across the stage receiving my diploma, looking out in the crowd, and seeing my father cheering not for me, but for my ex best friend?"
I couldn't stop. I was so angry and hurt I wanted to get out of there. Coming to see him was a mistake I don't know what I expected. He didn't love us anymore and that was that. Why did I think things would be different?
He was speechless. I looked away from his eyes and looked around the house. Wedding, baby, and family pictures hung up all around. My house used to look like that, it still does actually. We just had to change a lot of them so we wouldn't have to walk to the fridge and see my father's stupid smiling face.
"I married your mother because I did love her. We had a great life together, but sometimes moms and dads just fall out of love. Love is like a puzzle, you need to have all of the pieces in order to have a finished puzzle. There was always a piece missing, but with Michelle it's all so diff..."
I got up and started to walk away. "I don't need to hear how great your new life is! You are a terrible and awful person! I hate you!" Then I walked out the door screaming and in tears. Not tears that filled my eyes, full on bawling tears. To make everything even better, a car pulled into the driveway right next to Aidan's. Sophia and her mom got out of the car and looked at me. I gave her a cold and long glare. She was saying things, but I tuned everything out. I was done with this messed up family. I opened the door and got in without saying anything. Then all at once I lost it. Every emotion I held onto that entire time I was inside came out. I was yelling and crying. Aidan let me have a moment, then when I finally stopped screaming he told me we were all going to go through this today. I could tell he purposely didn't tell me it was going to be okay because we both knew that after hearing everything, we would all need time to recover.
He began to drive as I continued to cry. I looked out the window up to their front door. Everyone was on the porch now looking at the car, including the two babies.
"Let it out," Aidan whispered.
I rolled down the window and screamed as loud as I could,
"I hate you!"
I nodded and took a deep breath. My legs felt extremely weak. I made my way slowly up the steps, looked back at the car and saw Aidan give me a reassuring nod, and rang the doorbell. The door opened and there he was, holding a female version of himself. His smiling face immediately went cold.
