Without You Part 1
The same blue towel that I had seen on the beach everyday since June 22 was in its usual spot. I walked over to where the towel was laying and sat down on it, waiting for it's owner to return from the water. I took off my shirt, put on my sunglasses, and fell asleep.
I was woken up by droplets of salty water cooling off my chest. I opened my eyes and there she was. Her curly hair flipped over being thrown into a bun. Her glistening skin shining so perfectly under the sun. She was looking at me directly in the eyes and I prayed she couldn't see me staring at her through my sunglasses. I figured she couldn't when she did what any best friend would have done. A pile of sand landed on my face and in my mouth. Typical Alaina.
"Alaina!" I yelled.
"Hope you had a good nap. It's time to go," she smiled her beautiful and bright one.
"You suck," I told her as I got up from the ground. I pretended to start shaking out her towel, but I threw it at her instead. "There. Now we're even."
Back at the house we were renting, she called dibs on showering first and I knew better than to fight her. I looked in the mirror hung up on the wall and started laughing.
"Um, Cameron?" she asked from inside the bathroom. She opened the door a crack and stuck her head out.
"I look like a lobster; why didn't you tell me?"
"Figured it would be better when you saw for yourself," she laughed, shut the door, and started the shower.
"Cam? Cameron!"
I jumped off of the bed and turned to face her. She was wearing a yellow tank top and blue shorts; her hair still wrapped up in a towel and her cheeks sun burnt pink with not an ounce of makeup on and yet she was still the most beautiful girl I had ever laid eyes on.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"Yeah. Yeah sorry. I'm gonna go shower now."
I should have known she knew me too well. She grabbed my wrist and forced me to look her in the eyes. "What's wrong?"
Without even caring, I picked her up and wrapped her in a hug knowing it would only make me fall for her even harder. She hugged me back with no hesitation, but continued to ask me what was wrong. How do you even tell your best friend this?
I put her back down and stared over her shoulder at her journal because I was too weak to look her in the eyes. "I was just thinking. We are on the most beautiful island, together. I wouldn't want to be here with any other friend." I met her eyes. "We are living our dream since we were five, literally. We're finally in Hawaii! I can't wait to do all of the things we'd been dreaming of!"
Thankfully, she bought this answer mainly because it was partly true. "Me too," she responded. Now she seemed off. I began to panic thinking I'd said too much."Go shower Cam, we are going to miss our dinner reservations."
The restaurant overlooked the water right as the sun was beginning to set. We finished eating and found a hut right along the beach where they rented bikes. We rode side by side laughing and screaming, both acting like the carefree soul Alaina was. She started to turn off the road and I followed her, not having any clue as to where we were going. She got off her bike right before a huge mountain.
"Come on, we're going for a hike. We have about an hour and a half left of sun. I've heard it's beautiful up there," she explained and offered me her hand.
Hesitantly, I got off of my bike and took her hand into mine. It was things that she did that gave me false signs. Sometimes we acted like a couple in public, but I knew she was doing things and not thinking into it because we'd been all over each other for as long as I could remember. We started the long walk up still holding hands.
By the time we got up to the top, we were both exhausted, but the view was absolutely breathtaking. The waves crashed below us as we stood in awe of the scene. I sat down on the rocks and patted the space next to me, wanting nothing more than to hold her in that exact moment. She rested her head on my shoulder and I wrapped my arms around her waist. We sat there together, watching the sun slowly inch farther and farther down towards the water. It was this moment that I just wanted to scream those three words to the whole world. Let everyone know, that I loved her. That I could no longer fight my feelings for her because I loved her too much. That I didn't want to fight them anymore.
I was woken up by droplets of salty water cooling off my chest. I opened my eyes and there she was. Her curly hair flipped over being thrown into a bun. She was a handful, but I didn't even mind it. She had already made the trip ten times better and it had only been four days. We would stay up until three in the morning talking and laughing about the most random things just like best friends would do. Except that's not what I wished we always did. I wanted to be holding her in my arms at three in the morning telling her how much I loved her. I've known I've loved her since two summers ago. We went to her cousin's twenty fifth birthday and I saw her dancing. As talented as Alaina is, she can't dance. Not for the life of her, but she didn't care. When I went to go get her a drink, she continued to dance by herself in a crowd full of older people without a care in the world. I knew I couldn't love her in any way more than a friend; things couldn't be like that. I wanted to tell her how I truly felt more than anything, but it would mess everything up. I would lose her and I could not bare the thought of that. It would change everything. She does not feel the same way about me; I could never tell her. There was not one thing about Alaina that I didn't love. She was always pointing out her flaws and trying to cover up her insecurities, and as her best friend I had to joke about them when I wanted to reassure her that there was nothing to be insecure about. I loved her view on life. She once told me that life wasn't worth caring what others thought of you. It was worth getting up at five o'clock in the morning to see the sunrise and staying up all night being crazy and screaming the lyrics to your favorite songs with your best friends.
I jumped off of the bed and turned to face her. She was wearing a yellow tank top and blue shorts; her hair still wrapped up in a towel and her cheeks sun burnt pink with not an ounce of makeup on and yet she was still the most beautiful girl I had ever laid eyes on.
